Chapter 21
After I send Matt Costa the photo of the blue bananas sitting on the award-winning penis- shaped tumours I expect my phone to start ringing straight away. When it doesnât I keep checking whether Iâve put it on silent or if the signal is bad.
Farrell nudges me with his elbow. âAdrenalin worn off?â
âYeah, I think soâ¦â
Weâre in a pub along the river, surrounded by tense football fans who are watching a match on the flat screen above our heads. A few of Farrellâs friends are there. Theyâve looked at the pictures on my phone, had a laugh, made a few rude comments, and now theyâre glued to the screen again. Dee has popped in, but as usual, she wonât be staying because sheâs got a guitar lesson to give.
âYouâve got so much to tell me,â she says, tapping my knee excitedly. âIâve been following your status updates. So, are you going to see him again?â
Sheâs talking about Elliot. Everyone knows about him now. I probably shouldnât have been so open about it on Facebook. What if it doesnât work out?
âYeah, definitely. He asked me out today but I was busy.â
He rang me, to ask me out. Of course itâs going to work out.
âYouâre not busy now,â she says, with a wink. âTell him to come so we can meet him!â
âI thought you had to go soon.â
She looks at her watch and her face falls. âShit. How can that be the time already?â
âItâs alright. I wasnât going to ring him. Iâve got too much to do.â
The truth is Iâm feeling a little agitated because I want to be at home working on my website. It was the others who wanted to celebrate pulling off the stunt. Weâve ordered the cheapest bottle of fizz on the menu; it costs the equivalent of two cans of spray paint. That would never have occurred to me before.
The football fans whoop when the cork pops and someone runs out of the toilets with his belt undone and shouts, âWho scored?â He gives us a dirty look when he realises his mistake and heads back into the toilet.
âSo does Elliot know youâre a crazy banana lady?â Dee asks, grinning.
âNot yet.â
âDo you think heâd approve?â
I think of Montagueâs exhibition and frown. âYes, I think heâd take it quite seriously.â
Farrell leans in at that moment, âwho would take what seriously?â
âOh nothing.â I donât want to get into it now.
Dee checks her watch again, âIâve got to go, but let me know the gossâ¦â
âIs this about Sir Elliot?â Farrell asks. âWhatâs the goss?â
âYouâre up to speed,â I say. âYou were there when he rang.â
âYou turned him down, didnât you?â
I roll my eyes, âyou make it sound like he proposed.â
Dee laughs, âimagine! What would you have said?â
âOh shut up, donât be ridiculous.â
We hug goodbye, then she hoists her guitar onto her back and squeezes through everyone to get out. I catch Bibianaâs eye and she raises her glass of Prosecco to me with a big smile. Farrellâs friends are
